Sleep Manager ==================== This program locates free contiguous disk spaces and allocates them for storing BASE MEMORY, EXTENDED MEMORY, VIDEO MEMORY, and SM RAM. The disk spaces found are reserved for system use (these spaces are no longer accessible to the user). If the program cannot find the required disk spaces, it shows the error message "Not enough disk space for allocation". The disk may have enough free spaces but these free spaces exist as small fragments. In this case, you can use tools such as SpeedDisk (Norton Utilities) or Defrag (DOS 6.0 or above) to compact your free disk spaces. Then run this program again. Why does this program need to allocate disk spaces? When most of the power is removed from the computer, (e.g. due to hibernation timer time-out) the system swaps all memory images and saves all system status information into these disk spaces. When you resume the computer from hibernation mode, the computer will return to its previous state. If you do not run this program to allocate the required disk spaces, hibernation will not work. Once this program is executed, the computer will have the hibernation feature and you do not need to run this program again except when the data in CMOS is lost or corrupted. This utility, Sleep Manager, is provided for both DOS-based and Windows- based user. The command line syntax is described as below. This program has four paramaters: /HELP or /? : Shows a help screen briefly describing how to use the parameters. /CREATE=size : Allocates contiguous disk spaces for swapping memory image (unit=KB) and saving system registers. We suggest that you allocate the required disk spaces before you start using your PC. You may specify the size of the disk space which you want to allocate. If the size value you assigned is less than the system memory size, the program will use the system memory size instead. The default value is the system memory size. The program will add additional disk spaces for VIDEO MEMORY, SM RAM, and HEADER information whose sizes are described in NOTICE below. If you want to resize the allocated disk spaces, you have two options: [1] First execute this program with /DELETE parameter described below and then run this program with this parameter again. [2] Directly execute SleepMgr with this parameter to resize the needed disk spaces automatically. If the data in CMOS is lost or corrupted and you run this program with /CREATE parameter, the program will auto-detect and then allocate the disk spaces. The program will reallocate the disk space based on the new size you specify. /DELETE : Use this parameter to free the disk space allocated by the program. Notices: 1. The installation steps under MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 are as follows : (1) Insert Sleep Manager installation diskette into diskette drive. (2) At DOS prompt, execute this program. (example: A:\install) (3) Follow the screen instructions to complete the installation. 2. To install Sleep Manager in Win 95 or Win 98, you can run 'setup.exe' from the diskette that contains Sleep Manager and follow the instructions to complete the installation. 3. To uninstall Sleep Manager in MS-DOS or Windows 3.1, you need to remark SleepMgr.exe in autoexec.bat. 4. To uninstall Sleep Manager in Win 95 or Win 98, you may run 'Add/Remove Programs' applet in Control Panel. Select 'Sleep Manager for Win 95 and Win 98' and remove it. 5. If you do not specify any paramater when you run Sleep Manager under DOS prompt, and you have already generated reserved area in your hard disk, this utility will prompt you current size of reserved area. 6. Reserved areas are stored in the format of SYSTEM/HIDDEN/READ_ONLY File in Hard Disk. 7. While using /CREATE parameter for creating reserved disk spaces, this program will add more values, including VIDEO MEMORY, SM RAM and HEADER information, to the size value that you assign. Default values for these items are: VIDEO MEMORY : 1024KB SM RAM : 64KB HEADER : 1 sector of the hard disk used 8. This utility runs under the DOS, Windows 3.1 DOS Prompt, and Win95, Win98 DOS Prompt environment only. (Example : OS/2 is not supported.) 9. If your hard disk with reserved area is switched to be used by another machine, you can use SleepMgr command directly on that machine to make BIOS aware of the entry point for the reserved area. 10.If on-board memory size is changed since the last time you executed this program, please resize the allocated disk spaces by either one of the following two methods. a. Using '/C' parameter of this program to release all allocated disk spaces and then reallocate the appropriate disk spaces automatically. b. Using '/D' parameter of this program to reclaim the allocated disk spaces and then '/C' parameter to create the appropriate disk spaces. 11.If you delete the allocated disk space and do not uninstall Sleep Manager, Sleep Manager will still create the hibernation file when a hibernation event occurs (e.g, hibernation timer, hibernation hot key, etc.) 12.You should take care with DBLSPACE environment while using SleepMgr. If you find that your compressed drive does not contain contiguous memory for reserved area in Hard Disk, you can use the following command to enlarge or reduce the size of a compressed drive. DBLSPACE /SIZE[size1 | /RESERVE=size2] drive: 13.User should not create shortcut for Sleep Manager manually. Because the uninstall process will not remove user's own create file or link.
