There it is. I found this file, pre-message, then got side-tracked and
forgot to look in it.

Not on a Redhat System. Adduser only makes reference to the
/etc/login.defs file.
Also did the 2.4.x kernels allow UID/GIDs greater than 64K. I remember
the discussion quite awhile ago but can't remember when it was going to go
into effect.
