Hi Alex,
building a vanilla 2.4.23 with just the first patch applied,
I get the following error during make bzImage:

-fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -march=i686 -nostdinc
-iwithprefix include -DKBUILD_BASENAME=buffer -DEXPORT_SYMTAB -c buffer.c
buffer.c: In function `kupdate':
buffer.c:3102: parse error before `wait'
buffer.c:3104: `wait' undeclared (first use in this function)
buffer.c:3104: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
buffer.c:3104: for each function it appears in.)
Can you help?
