(maybe read it once again :)
It is an issue with the _kernel_, or to be precise
the tools back then (1-2 years ago) did not anticipate
that they would be used by some nostalgic folks like
you, with an upcoming 2.0 release ... so the code back
then did not check for >= 1.x release, but for == 1.x
release ...
... now with 2.0 we naturally chose a 2.x identifier,
which definitely do confuse the ancient tools ...
but, to allow for backwards compatibility *sigh* I
added an option to the kernel, which allows you to
announce a fake 1.00ff version, which make the tools
happy again ...

well, my suggestion was not to go back even further
in history, and it was not my intention to start a
competition for the oldest working tool either ...
and of course, as my time machine is broken right now
I can neither modify the ancient tools for you, nor
add the kernel patch to the exitsing 2.6.12.2-vs2.0-rc5
kernel, but as I said, it will be in 2.0 (or the next
release candidate)
