         I think I have narrowed down the problem here :

(gdb) r -o RPM::RootDir=/disk/vservers/opteron1 -o Dir=/disk/vservers/opteron1 -
o Dir::State=/etc/vservers/opteron1/apps/pkgmgmt/base/apt/state -o
Dir::Cache=/etc/vservers/opteron1/apps/pkgmgmt/base/apt/cache -o
Dir::Cache::archives=/etc/vservers/opteron1/apps/pkgmgmt/base/apt/archives -o
Dir::Bin::rpm=/usr/lib/util-vserver/vrpm-preload -o
Dir::Etc=/etc/vservers/opteron1/apps/pkgmgmt/base/apt/etc
-o RPM::Order=true -o RPM::PM=external install -y glibc filesystem libattr
coreutils setup rpm vim-minimal tar gcc bzip2 gzip apt yum openssh
Starting program: /usr/bin/apt-get -o RPM::RootDir=/disk/vservers/opteron1

/apt/state -o Dir::Cache=/etc/vservers/opteron1/apps/pkgmgmt/base/apt/cache -o D
ir::Cache::archives=/etc/vservers/opteron1/apps/pkgmgmt/base/apt/archives

Reading Package Lists... Error!

The the file mentioned exists.
Look like the problem is in apt-get. However I am using the same
custom ebuild on another older Gentoo system with no problems...
