Which distro was that? Almost every LiveCD I've tried has good LVM
support. Knoppix from about 2 years ago certainly did, as does Ubuntu
Breezy and perhaps even Warty, too.

Having said that you're probably still safer with at least the root
filesystem on a non-LVM partition.
