Thanks for that recipe. I will try this, since I've got ipmitool on the
Sun Fire X2100 (Tyan SMDC) working so at least I have a good chance
of getting into BIOS and/or control grub/see Linux boot messages.

Usually remotely installing a DIY kernel is a recipe for disaster.
