mtab, fstab and mount are all three big liars! :)
don't trust them!

always check with /proc/mounts or stat ...

by default /tmp will be a 16MB tempfs, and you
might hit that limit (note, that can be adjusted)
it might as well be that you hit a lock limit
(double check with your configuration and of
course /proc/vierual/<xid>/limits)
