I don't know if this is the problem, but 'ps -ax' is different from
'ps ax' (the latter is probably what you want).
Quoting ps(1):
-a Select all processes except session leaders (see
getsid(2)) and processes not associated with a terminal.
a ... this option causes ps to list all processes
with a terminal (tty), or to list all processes when used
together with the x option.
