maybe it takes quite long (timeout +/- something)
and thus, the timeout strikes sometimes ...

I observed similar with qmail, which is quite
strange in shutdown behaviour, especially when
combined with other services ...

(read: it can take between 1 and 10 minutes to
do a proper shutdown)
