O.k., I tried with vs2.3.0.11, but no luck (should I do also with
2.2.0-rc21 ?):

vs115 ~ # uname -a
Linux vs115 2.6.20-vs2.3.0.11-gentoo #1 SMP Tue Mar 27 20:23:08 CEST 2007 i686
Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1200MHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I gave the mount-ccaps:

gs vs115 # cat ccapabilities
binary_mount
secure_mount

And then I also tried with SYS_ADMIN bcaps (shouldn't be needed):

gs vs115 # cat bcapabilities
SYS_ADMIN

gs vs115 # cat /proc/virtual/115/status
UseCnt: 11
Tasks: 4
Flags: 0000000602020010
BCaps: 00000000346c05ff
CCaps: 0000000000050101
Spaces: 0c020200
gs vs115 #

Following is an excerpt from trace of mount.cifs:
