I would need to run a diagnostic from within each of the guest to
an external IP (since the host can always ping the guest IP
and sees no problem -- it's the switch outside that gets
flummoxed).

Since this is a hardware (chipset) issue either kernel or BIOS will
be powerless. But I'll have to reproduce the problem on the host
NIC first. If it recurs there, this thing gets RMAed.
