Using 2.6.24 on 2 processor machine (tickless - preemptable) does seem to improve
the performance. But it also certainly screws ntpd!

Haven't tried 2.6.24.2 yet - still waiting for a 2.6.24.x vserver patch announcement
rather than the 2.6.24-rc patch that is posted.
