Do you intend run any services on the host? You could have a look at
alpine-linux otherwise. I boot the vserver host from USB and run it
from tmpfs. The disks are dedicated the vserver guests.

Alpine Linux provides a minimal vserver host "livecd" image so its
fairly easy to boot it up and test it.
