Nottingham LUG - 2001 November

[ Nottingham LUG Home ]

For our second season of Winter Sessions, Godfrey Nix from Hosteurope--one of the UK's largest web-hosting and dedicated server providers--came to talk to the Nottingham LUG and kick off our second season of successful winter sessions.

We are very thankful for Godfrey's employer, Hosteurope, for sponsoring the event and lending several Cobalt RaQs which are small rack-mount servers running GNU/Linux and are designed principally for large-scale web-hosting. The servers have either MIPS or AMD hardware inside which proves than non-x86 systems can make huge inroads into the market-place.

Linux--The Alternative Choice

After weeks of planning, the November 2001 meeting was aimed to make a big impact on the collective awareness of local IT workers. As it happened, the attendance was less than expected, but with several requests to `please repeat it as I was unable to attend'.

Details were circulated to several large consultancies, college lecturers, council IT departments and business advice centres. Local company Host Europe sponsored the event, which was held in the Dunkirk Community Centre just south of the University Hospital and opposite the main University of Nottingham campus.

Godfrey Nix did a short introduction, and then club members and visitors mingled around a few demo machines, whilst munching on some nice grub, brought and well laid out by Ted Marston.

Tom Bird was busy snapping away with his toy of the moment, a digital camera. We leave it to you to judge the merits of the pictures of the event.

Please pass on the meeting details to your friends/work colleagues. If you are not on the mailing list, then you can subscribe, by sending a message with just the words
