what you are probably searching for is
# tar xjf linux-vserver-1.00.tar.bz2
page 3: patch -p1 < ...
does not execute the patch, it applies it
I'm probably hurting some religious beliefs
with the following question:
why the hell do you publish an ASCII
howto as pdf?
the remaining stuff looks okay to me ...
