bad ... but probably also a memory allocation issue

side note:

        2GB seem to become the 'usual' amount of memory
        which creates a brand new field of strange errors

why? simple, the kernel can not handle more than ~900M
        on a typical 32bit machine (i.e. x86), and so you
        have to use high mem which adds pressure to the
        low memory allocations required for such things
        like network buffers ...

what can be done?

there where some patches around allowing for different
splits (like 2G/2G) which would allow to use 2GB without
the highmem and all related issues ...

of course, using just 900MB or buying a 64bit machine is
a real alternative to that ;)

depends on the hardware, and of course on the usage pattern,
because one instance of postfix will not cause _any_ memory
pressure on a typical system ...

it for sure adds to the memory pressure) ...
