The reason is to save a good amount of space (30MB instead of >300MB)
In addition access to portage tree is much quicker (far less disk seeking)
and distribution of portage tree among various hosts is simple and quick (1
file to move) and it's possible to switch back a few days without difficulty,
just mount the previous image.
